KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The first numbers comparing traffic on Kirksville's new highway 63 and traffic on Baltimore Street give some indication as to how many motorists are using each roadway, but city officials say, right now, they can't draw any conclusion from the April 2012 study because the information is just raw numbers.

Some stretches of Baltimore Street show as much as a 20% decrease in traffic compared to the same period in 2009.

Those stretches include a section of Baltimore Street south of Washington Street, and on the north end, a section of Baltimore Street north of Route P.

As for traffic on the new highway 63, early indications are that it's right on track with modot projections.

"The number of vehicles going around Kirksville are between 3,000 and 3,500, said John Buckwalter, the Public Works Director of Kirksville.  "That's a larger number than the decrease in traffic anywhere in Kirksville."

No trucks were counted in this study.

A more complete study was done in May, and it will be a few months before that information is available.
