KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The money saved due to the mild weather we had across the Heartland this past winter, will now benefit city projects across Kirksville this summer.

Snow removal was at a minimum this winter in the area, and for the Kirksville Public Works Department that meant a maximum saving.

$40,000 was what the city saved and instead of holding that money over for the next year, the city wants to take advantage  of the extra money and invest it back into the city.

"(Money will) be used to purchase materials for street improvements," said John Buckwalter, Director of Kirksville Public Works. "They'll be used specifially for the Bearcreek-9 storm damage project to help offset the cost of curbs, gutters and pavements in the area."

Buckwalter adds, that due to not having to pay out overtime hours during for snow removal, that they will also be able to continue their household hazardous waste program through September.
