KIRKSVILLE - MO -- For those enrolled in the WIC program, the next time you go to the grocery store there's one significant product that you'll no longer be able to purchase.

New changes in Missouri's WIC guidelines began Monday, and the big change is that cheese will no longer be included as a WIC purchase.

According to a RN at the Adair County Health Department, this is just a minor change. As those enrolled with the program will still be able to get all the food groups.

This change comes in part due to grocery stores, and the increase of work load of Missouri WIC departments.

"Some of the reasons for that is for the cost containment," said Shelley Behrens RN, Adair Co. Health Dept. "There's been a real increase in the cost of groceries. Also, an increase in our case loads across the state."

Going off of 2011 numbers, with the eliminations of cheese and a few other items, the state looks to save more than $1.6 million dollars.
