ADAIR COUNTY, MISSOURI -- A Heartland man is in custody following a high speed pursuit through two counties.

The incident began just after midnight Sunday morning.

Charged is Jeffrey Sharp, 31, of Kirksville. He is charged with second degree assault, felony resisting arrest along with two misdemeanor charges. He is being held in the Adair County Jail under $25,000 cash only bond.

According to court papers, Sharp's car was clocked by a highway patrol trooper, going 20 MPH over the speed limit in Adair County. The trooper followed Sharp's vehicle at a high rate of speed, thru portions of Macon County before the car returned to Adair County. At one point, authorities say the car made a u-turn on Gifford Trail, nearly striking the trooper's car head on. The pursuit ended a short time later on Gifford Trail when the driver and a passenger both got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Sharp, who authorities say was driving the car, was taken into custody later, with the assistance of the patrol's k-9 unit. Sharp was free on bond, from two drug related felony charges.

Law enforcement officers are continuing to search for the passenger of the vehicle and the investigation is continuing.
