OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Two weeks ago, KTVO reported about a proposed bill, being discussed in the Iowa House of Representatives, which would amend the Iowa Constitution and make firearms more accessible to the public.

The amendment in doing so would make it harder for local, county and state officials limit who can get and gun and where they can carry them.

As KTVO reported then, the proposal is not sitting well with county attorneys or sheriffs, being they want to make sure firearms do not get into the wrong hands.

The proposed bill, HJR2005, left committee on February 14. Supporters of the bill say that it is a more watered down version than what they proposed.

On Wednesday, KTVO spoke with Jeff Burkett, President of the Iowa Firearms Coalition.

Burkett told KTVO that this bill is about the right to keep and bear arms, not about putting firearms in the wrong hands.

"Our goal is not to provide law for citizens that don’t abide by the law as some have alluded to. This is not about creating some sort of avenue for felons to be able to more easily cause crime. This is about protecting the rights of the 99% of Iowans which are law abiding good citizens and to provide them a state with an enumerated right to keep and bear arms. Iowa is one of six states that does not have that protection," said Burkett.

The proposed bill will now move to the full house. If the Republican controlled house passes the amendment, many believe that it would not pass the Democratic controlled senate.
