KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The 7th Annual Polar Plunge is Feb. 11, less than two weeks away.

During last year's plunge, more than 180 people ran into the icy Forest Lake at Thousand Hills State Park.  The plunge will take place at 2 p.m.

The committee co-chair said the thrill of the plunge compares to riding a roller coaster.

"Once you get in there, you get out,. you're actually warmer after you get out," said Tom Johnson.  "I kind of liken it to riding a roller coaster. You look at the roller coaster and go this is scary and you do it. You ride the roller coaster, you get off, and go let's go again."

So far, organizers said that more than a hundred people have registered online. The cost is $50. Same day registration will begin at noon.

If you are not interested in plunging but want to help, you can also take part in the 5K Frostbite Run, or 1K Frostbite Walk.  The registration costs $15 and it will start at 10 a.m. The route is around the Thousand Hills State Park.

Proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics programs throughout Northeast Missouri. Organizers said they hope this year they'll raise at least $30, 000.
