KIRKSVILLE,MO. -- If you plan to visit the white sandy beaches of the Dominican Republic this spring, the United States Postal Service says it's best to get your passport now.

On Saturday, the Kirksville Post Office held a passport fair. Customers were able to visit until around 2 p.m. and receive help filling out the application. Officials say you should get your passport well advance of your trip.

"The passport takes about 4 to 6 weeks so don't wait till the last minute to come and get it," said Corey King, the manager of Customer Service at the Kirksville branch.  "Try to get it three to four months in advance so if you have any problems, you'll have enough time to get it corrected through the passport agency." >

When applying for a passport for the first time, you must bring your driver license, the original copy of your birth certificate, a two by two inch photo that features you without a smile, and a check or money order. An adult passport book costs $110 plus the $25 processing fee.

If you want to get a passport for children, both parents must be present when applying.

Also, there is a passport card that costs $30 if you plan to travel by land to Canada or Mexico.

The Kirksville Post Office will have another Passport Fair on April 28, and July 28.
