BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Davis County freshman McKayla Boyd is a few years away from college, but she already has something pretty big to include with her applications.
The 14-year-old started writing a story in the spring of 2010, and now it is a published novel. Boyd authored "The Other World", a fantasy novel.
"I read a lot, and watch a lot of fantasy movies," she said. "I especially love the Harry Potter series, so I guess that's where the idea came from."
It took Boyd about a year to write the story. When she brought it up to her parents, they suggested they try getting it published, and found a company online that would pick up the book. And the feedback has been pretty good.
"I know a few of my friends have read it, some family members... some friends of the family have too, and they say they all like it," Boyd said.
"The Other World" is about a girl who discovers she is a witch and a princess, and she encounters a few problems along her journey. Boyd has started writing a sequel, but says it is in its early stages.
She said the hardest part about writing was getting over the writer's block. Taking breaks helped a lot, and when she came back after a day or so, the ideas started flowing.
Boyd said she would like to be an author, but is also considering teaching high school English.
