OTTUMWA -- Christmas decorations are springing up across the heartland this time of year but they can also pose a danger.

The Ottumwa Fire Department showed KTVO a video of a Christmas tree that burned an entire room down in less than a minute.  Deputy Chief Cory Benge says faulty wiring is the biggest issue when it comes to Christmas trees.

“One thing you want to do is make sure that the Christmas tree lights are U-L tested,” Benge said. “Make sure you inspect them every year.  Make sure the wires aren’t frayed, the bulbs aren’t broken, that type of thing.”

Benge says people should avoid lighting candles by the tree.  The needles can dry up quickly so watering the tree daily is a must.

Many people don’t know that where you place the tree can be a fire hazard as well.

"What we don't want to see is a Christmas tree blocking your only second path of egress.  We don't want to see it blocking the only other window you have to get out of a room.  You always want to have ways out.  Don't let the Christmas tree block your secondary way out, whether it's a real one or a fake one."

Firefighters also tell residents to turn off their Christmas lights before leaving your home.
