KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Salvation Army bells are ringing at a store near you as they kick off their Christmas fundraising campaign.

Kettles will be at Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, Walgreens, Westlake Hardware, and J.C.Penny Co. The Salvation Army hopes to raise $85,0000. The money will be used during Christmas and also to fund programs in 2012.

KTVO talked to one bell ringer, who said she signed up for the job to earn some extra Christmas money.

"I'm doing this partly for my brother john, " said Johanna Coombs.  "He's a United States Marine stationed in Quantico, Virginia. So, I like to support him whenever I can. "

Coombs said the Salvation Army bell ringers are a combination of paid workers and volunteers. She said the first day went well and that about 100 people put money into her kettle.

If you can't get to one of the kettles, the Salvation Army said you can drop off donations at their office at 1004 Gardner St., or mail donations to: The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1048, Kirksville, Mo. 63501.

The Salvation Army is also looking for people to donate turkeys, new toys and canned food. You can call 660-665-7885 for more information.
