MT. PLEASANT, IOWA -- Iowa Wesleyan College got a special treat Sunday when their former college president Bill Johnston returned with his wife Susan Johnston for a reception to showcase her artwork.

The reception was held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Iowa Wesleyan College Art Gallery. Johnston had 25 watercolor paintings on display.

Johnston said she has been painting with watercolors for most of her life.

Some of the paintings resembled clothing and other artifacts that she found in her mother's home. Others showcased the landscapes of France, where she visited the summer of 2011.

Johnston said that watercolor is great for representing the different shades of color. She believes that her artwork is like poetry.

"My philosophy right now is that I'm more interested in being like a poet," Johnston said.

"I want people to experience the artwork and to talk about it and enjoy it. If they can do that, I am very pleased."

Some of her paintings she had on display are valued at close to $2,000. Johnston's work is on display in public and private collections throughout the country.
