OTTUMWA -- Americans are still buzzing about the human papillomavirus vaccine.
Texas governor Rick Perry made it mandatory for girls to take the vaccine in his state. Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann thought the executive order crossed the government’s role in people’s lives.
HPV many times can lead to cervical cancer in women. Lynelle Diers of the Wapello County Public Health Center says the vaccine is a great preventative measure. The decision still comes down to the parents in Iowa.
“I think you need to evaluate pros and cons, which in the long run I do believe the pros out weigh the cons of receiving the vaccines,” said Diers. “We do prepare the individuals. It is a little more painful than the other vaccinations."
The shot is available for both boys and girls. What do you think? Should children be forced to get the vaccine? Comment below the story.
