KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Can you get in trouble for what you post on Facebook and other networking sites?
That's the question we're answering for you in our Facebook Story of the Day.
The law does hold you accountable for what you post online if it falls under Missouri's harassment statute.
Harassment is defined as communication that intimidates or causes fear of physical harm to another person.
For a first time offender, that's a class A misdemeanor punishable up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
Pictures can also build a case against you in a court of law, for instance if you're a minor in possession of alcohol.
“It's tough to make cases, however they are evidence and can be used to solidify other testimony and other statements that are being made by witnesses. What people often don't realize is that if they're on probation and they are found to be in a picture possessing alcohol or whatnot and they're not supposed to, that creates a problem for them,” said Adair County Prosecutor Matt Wilson.
Wilson says any type of harassing electronic communication can get you in trouble, including phone calls, emails, and text messages.
He says people need to think long-term about what they're posting online, and that it can spread very quickly.
