KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Two families from northern Missouri were recognized Tuesday by the University of Missouri Extension and Adair County Extension Council.

Gena Johnson Briggs and Billy Briggs were recognized as the 2011 Adair County Century Farm Family. Gena's paternal great grandfather was Egbert Johnson. The 80 acre farm has been in the family for one hundred years. The century farm program dates back to 1976 which awards certificates and signs to persons owning farms that have been in the same family for 100 years or more. There is about 100 century farms currently recognized in Adair County.

The Extension Center and Council also recognized Jim and Lanna Novinger and family of Kirksville as being one of the 107 families honored during the Missouri State Fair's Farm Family Day. Each year the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state that are active in their community, involved in agricultural activities and who participate in local extension educational programs.

Several dozen gathered at the Truman farm to enjoy dinner and honor the families during the annual event.
