KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Make safety a priority this upcoming holiday weekend.

While you're embarking on that last camping trip or outing, don't forget the rules of the road.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging drivers to take extra precaution on the busy highways.

“It is a time to make sure that we don't just focus on fun, that we do focus on being safe. Last year in the state of Missouri seven people were killed in traffic fatalities in our state during the particular holiday period,” said Sgt. Brent Bernhardt, Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Don't forget to buckle up when hitting the road this weekend, and choose a sober designated driver if consuming alcohol.

“Missouri State Highway Patrol is going to be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. which means that every one of our state troopers are going to be working some time during the holiday period, not only aggressively enforcing Missouri traffic laws but helping those motorists should they encounter some type of roadside emergency,” Bernhardt said.

Troop B will also be participating in DWI saturations, moving patrols, and 20 Mile Trooper, where troopers are stationed at 20 mile intervals along several interstate highways, including 60, 63, and 70.
