OTTUMWA, IOWA -- An Ottumwa shelter celebrated a major milestone Friday.
The Promise Center located on the 200 block of Main Street held its 10 year anniversary. The center is programmed by the Southern Iowa Mental Health Center and has received more support than they expected over the years.
It services people with mental illnesses and gives them opportunities to meet the community. Members of the Wapello County Board of Supervisors were also invited thanks to their support.
Southern Iowa Mental Health Social Worker Marlys Breaon-Drish said it changes their lives.
"It gives them a place to go, place to belong, meet new friends, develop social activities and interests in the community, learn more about what's available. And again it works toward their recovery goals; employment, new living arrangement, education, etc."
Organizers expected around 75 people to attend the celebration.
