OTTUMWA -- The debate about our debt continues in the nation’s capital.

KTVO recently spoke with U.S. Representative Dave Loebsack about the ongoing battle.

Loebsack says both sides are so far apart but he believes if both parties compromise a deal can and will be reached.

“I’m making all views known,” said Loebsack.  “Of course you know there’s currently no doubt that’s what I’m hearing from folks is we’ve got to get our long-term spending under control, there’s no doubt about that.  At the same time, people do not want us to balance the budget on the backs of the middle class, poor and on the seniors.”

Iowa is used to politicians waiting until the eleventh hour to finish a deal.  The state budget was passed one day before a state shutdown would have occurred.

“The more we allow things like this to go on to the last minute, the more legislatures and governors allow things to go into the last minute.  The less confidence the American people have in the political process itself.  The more disenchanted they become.  The more upset they become and rightly so.”
