KIRKSVILLE, MO -- With the majority of Northeast Missouri still trying to move on from the effects of that wind storm a couple of weekends ago, many of you wanted to know more about the debris ordinance. That’s Wednesday’s Facebook Story of The Day.

According to Kirksville Codes and Planning Director Brad Selby, Kirksville Public Works crews have been working long hours since Tuesday to pick up the debris from the storm.

With the large amount of limbs to clean up, no one knows exactly how long it will take. The city though hopes to have everything cleaned up by the end of July.

If a certain household doesn’t have its area cleaned up by a set date, the consequences are the same as for any other city code violation.

“If we see that stuff is not being taken care of by the end of July, depending if we get citizen complaints or how bad it looks; we would ask people, give them a face to face meeting, to clean up. If we don't see any results, we would always send out to people a letter, which is a letter of code violation. It gives them a reasonable amount of time to get it cleaned up. We hope people will abide by that due date.” Selby said.

If citizens don’t abide by the letter, then they will face a fine.

If a neighbor hasn’t made an effort to clean up their debris after a certain amount of time, residents can make a complaint.

“If it gets to the point where they believe it should have been cleaned up or it is an eyesore, they can get online and file a complaint. That's the easiest way to get a complaint in the city. Go to the city's website, there's a red box at the bottom of the website that says "file a report." That complaint you put to grass, weeds, tree limbs, whatever and that will go to my department. We take a look at it. We'll reply to that complaint. They can follow along on our progress with the complaint until we get it resolved.”
