JOPLIN, MO (AP) --
President Barack Obama today toured the devastation in the southwest Missouri city of Joplin and said the federal government will help residents rebuild.
The president's motorcade pulled into a neighborhood where downed trees had demolished homes and splintered wood was everywhere. American flags were planted here and there in the mess.
Obama hugged a woman, telling her he was sorry for her loss. Another woman told him that her uncle survived but his house did not. The president told her to tell her uncle "we're praying for him."
He also said the devastation in Joplin is a national tragedy, and that means there will be a national response. Obama said the federal government would be in Joplin until the city is back on its feet.
