KIRKSVILLE -- The outdoor pool at the Kirksville Aquatic Center should open on schedule by May 28.

Staff began filling the pool on May 6, but were forced to quit after noticing a significant leak. The staff monitored the leak that weekend and noticed a number of cracks and holes in the caulking along the concrete seam between the deep end and 5' area.

Bids were immediately sent out on May 11 and Commercial Waterproofing out of Parkville, Missouri, had the lowest bid at $3,800.

The repair will be paid from the park facilities line of the Capital Improvement Sales Tax Fund.

There was fear that the pool opening might not open by Memorial Day weekend.

Crews from Commercial Waterproofing were making repairs on Monday morning and the everything should be completed by Tuesday afternoon.

Assistant City Manger Melanie Smith said the facility should be good to go by Memorial Day weekend.

"I would say at this point we are set to open. They will finish their work tomorrow. Once done, we will allow it to cure for 7 days just like the caulking in the indoor pool did, that would mean next week by midweek we could start filling it and therefore we should be open on May 28, just like it was scheduled," Smith said.

The indoor pool went through several setbacks earlier in the spring, but that pool is now open for business.
