CENTERVILLE, IOWA -- Students in Centerville helped kickoff Global Youth Service Day.
The event, held Friday evening, was to be held outside at the new community garden started by Frank Renicek but weather forced the ceremony indoors at Howar Junior High.
The students are involved in many volunteer efforts including the garden, the lot which was donated by Renicek.
“I really like to give back to the community,” said volunteer Skyler Lawson. “I think the community gives a lot to everybody in the town so that we should give back a little bit too.”
“This gives me something to do and it makes me, makes us feel like we have value,” said volunteer Marshall Gill.
Renicek says he was happy to be part of the Global Youth Service Day and starting a garden in Centerville will add to the appeal of the town.
“I have seen a number of community gardens in cities and towns that I’ve visited in the last few years,” recalled Renicek. “I thought it would be a nice idea.”
Global Youth Service Day actually runs from April 15-17. For more information on Global Youth Service Day click here.
