KIRKSVILLE -- The Missouri House of Representatives has voted by a count of 100-54 to abolish the states sentencing advisory committee.

The 11-member commission issues recommendations about sentences for felony crimes. The recommendations are based on how serious each crime is, offenders' criminal records and alternative community programs in the state of Missouri.

Adair County prosecuting attorney Matt Wilson said the commission shouldn't be making recommendations based on budgetary constraints.

"Our goal is to open discussions up and look at what's going to reduce repeat offenders, while we are determine sentences, not budget constraints. That is what MOSAT became, reducing budget restraints," said Wilson.

The bill known as HB257 will enter the Missouri Senate now. The Senate has till May 13 to decide whether or not to pass the bill.
