MACON, MO. -- It's National Work Zone Safety Week which means MoDOT wants to remind drivers to be careful when passing through work zones.

With temperatures on the rise, more work zones are popping up, so MoDOT along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are asking drivers slow down and pay attention.

"If you're going through a work zone, take your time," said MoDOT Traffic Operations Engineer, Steve Barteau. "Don't be on your cell phone, don't text, just really pay attention to what's going on around you. As far as speed, You'll want to obey all the work zone signs. If there is a speed limit that's reduced, you'll want to go that speed."

According to Sgt. Brent Bernhardt of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there are several different fines you can face if you violate work zone traffic laws.

"Statewide there is a that that a driver can face an additional $250 fine for speeding in work zones when there are workers present and a sign is displayed that there are workers present," Sgt. Bernhardt said.

To help Drivers navigate through all these work zones, MoDOT has developed a new web-based construction map that shows the latest work and traffic delays. This map is available by clicking here.
