BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Recently we reported a story on how Ottumwa is changing their trash collection system. What some residents in the City of Bridges might not know is that cities in Davis County made the switch 10 months ago.
The new 91 gallon trash containers were paid for by Waste Management, and will be paid back in time through trash collection fees. Officials with the city also said that the new cans don't allow for animals to go through the trash, which makes the streets and neighborhoods cleaner.
Not everyone likes the new containers, "We have received complaints from older individuals. They say that is hard to take the containers to the curb, but Waste Management for the most part has been very helpful. They said that they will go to the older people's doors and help them get it to the street so that their trash can be collected," said Mayor Chris Miller of Bloomfield.
Mayor Miller has also had some great feedback. "What I am hearing recently, at least in the past few months, is that people like it. It obviously allows for a more uniform garbage can, not 4 or 5 different kinds of cans up and down the streets."
