KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Many are calling this “The Storm of the Century,” and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking you to keep safety first.

“We want to encourage everyone that if they don't have to travel, stay home or just stay at the location they're at,” said Sgt. Brent Bernhardt, Missouri State Highway Patrol. “The roadways are deteriorating very quickly and it is making driving very hazardous.”

Sgt. Bernhardt said the roads will be treacherous for the next several days.

“Added to the cold temperatures, [plus] the 40 mile-per-hour winds that are forecasted, we're going to see a lot of blowing snow, making traveling treacherous,” said Sgt. Bernhardt. “Certainly, this is not a time of the year to become stranded out on the roadway.”

If you get involved in an emergency situation on the roadways, you call contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol by dialing *55 on your cell phone, or you can contact 911.

"The Missouri State Highway Patrol has stepped up and expanded it's 24-hour coverage statewide,” said Sgt. Bernhardt. “All troopers will be working for the next several days, 12-hour shifts in an effort to make sure that everybody's safe.
