Time to buy cookies

KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It's Girl Scout cookie time once again. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri are taking orders through Jan. 30. The cookies are still $3.50 a package, which has a new look this year. A foil pack is replacing the traditional box to see how it is received by the general public.
While you get a delicious treat, Girl Scout volunteer Sue Barrett of Kirksville told KTVO the scouts use the proceeds from cookie sales in a variety of ways. "The girls use their money in their troops, and they pretty much decide in their troops how they want to use it," Barrett said. "Younger troops might spend the day at the Aquatic Center. Some troops have taken trips to St. Louis to the zoo, maybe a show at the Fox Theater. Some save it up and go on trips to Mexico or England."
The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri have switched bakeries after 20 years, from Little Brownie Bakers to ABC Bakers. Those are the only two companies licensed to make official Girl Scout cookies, but each owns its recipes and cookie names. Barrett says some cookies will have different names this year, but, "the all-time favorites are still there."
And Barrett says for a treat, the cookies are not diet busters. "None of the cookies have any trans fat. If you stay to a serving size, they're under 160 calories," Barrett said.
But if you would like to support the Girl Scouts without the cookies, you may make a purchase and donate the cookies to individual troops' Cookie Share. This is a voluntary project in which girls encourage customers to buy cookies for donation to a nonprofit organization. Locally, the cookies are donated to the Missouri National Guard.
If you have yet to be contacted by a Girl Scout and would like to buy cookies, call Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri at (800) 727-4475. February 23 is the start date for delivery of the cookies.
