Culver marks Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Governor Chet Culver has signed a proclamation marking Dec. 7 as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in Iowa and asking Iowans to lower the U.S. and state flags to half staff in its honor. Tuesday is the anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941 that prompted the United States to enter World War II.

A law signed by President Clinton in 1994 requires the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Dec. 7 each year, which he declared as national “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.”


The text of Governor Culver’s proclamation is below.

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, December 7, 2010, will be the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii; and

Whereas, Pearl Harbor remains as a monument to the losses incurred in the Pacific Theater of World War II and as a reminder of the vigilance our nation must maintain; and

Whereas, On this anniversary we salute the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice for their country on December 7, 1941, and those who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor:

Now, therefore, I, Chester J. Culver, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2010, as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in Iowa, and urge citizens to join in ringing bells and lowering the national and state flag to half staff on December 7.
