LANCASTER, MO -- It’s Wednesday which mean elections are officially over but not every position has been filled. Schuyler County is still without a prosecuting attorney for the next term. A blank line
appeared on the ballot so voters had to write in their choice candidate.
Ben Gray received the most votes making him the winner. However, Gray did not accept.
“I talked to him already on the phone and he told me he does not want to be the prosecuting attorney” said Schuyler County Clerk Bree Shaw. “From here he will write a letter officially forfeiting the position. I’ll send that letter to the governor’s office then.”
The governor’s office will now take over and appoint a prosecutor for Schuyler County but not until January 1, 2011. Any qualified candidate can still submit an application in the meantime.
“If somebody submits an application from the county that is qualified, I’d say more than likely he would appoint them since they are in the county” said Shaw. “But if no one submits an application from the county then he will have to go outside of the county to appoint somebody.”
Shaw said this is the first time something like this has happened while she has been in office.
