KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Some area students received a special lesson from the Kirksville Fire Department Monday.
Firefighters stopped by the Early Childhood Learning Center in Kirksville to talk to students as part of National Fire Prevention Week. They say it's never too early to start teaching kids about fire safety.
The kids were able to explore a fire truck and received an up-close look at the gear firefighters wear to battle a blaze during the presentation.
“It's important to start early because a lot of the kids are scared of firefighters in full gear. It's like a Halloween costume, all covered up and not being able to see the face. And so getting them used to us in gear is a key part of keeping them safe,” said Firefighter/EMT Jeremy Davis.
This year Fire Prevention Week is focusing on the importance of smoke detectors.
“Check your batteries monthly. We teach the kids at this age and all the way up through middle school to have your parents lift you up and have you push the button so they get to hear what it sounds like,” said Davis.
Davis says you should have at least one smoke alarm on each floor of your home. Parents should also designate a safe spot for all family members to meet if there is a fire in the house.
The Kirksville Fire Department is talking to kids at several area schools this week. Davis says the firefighters have a great time hearing from the students during Fire Prevention Week.
