KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Medical students from A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) held a 9/11 ceremony on Saturday to remember the events of that tragic day, nine years ago.  Members of the Student Association of Military Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) invited students as well as local fire, police, EMS, and city officials to pay their respects.

Students who are in the military wore their military dress uniforms to honor the fallen heroes from the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

“Being in the military, we think it’s really important to show our men and women in uniform as well as first responders and in the national guard, as a student body as a whole, we appreciate the sacrifice our military men and women make everyday” said SAMOPS President Jason Lanning.  “We also really appreciate our local first responders in the way that they come out and they protect our community.  It’s really a great thing that they do.”

Lanning said this was the second year SAMOPS held the 9/11 ceremony.  It was started in 2009 by John Thurman.
