KIRKSVILLE, MO --  

With the massive recall of more than a half billion eggs affecting both Iowa and Missouri, we wondered what local health agencies are required to do when a recall is issued by the FDA.
    
We found out that individual states check to see if they have any recalled product, and then authorize county health officials to check local stores and make sure the product in question has been taken off the shelf.

“My co-worker had done the first check and then they expanded the recall, that's what happens a lot of times, the recall will be expanded as more products are affected and then we will have to do another effectiveness check to see if the product has been removed, usually the distributor has already beat us to it and already has the product pulled,” said Stewart Blessing, Environmental Public Health Specialist.
   
No contaminated eggs were found in Adair County, and there have been no reported salmonella cases.
