JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- A group backing a Missouri ballot measure on health care raised nearly $23,000 in less than two weeks.

A campaign committee called Missourians for Health Care Freedom is supporting an Aug. 3 ballot measure defying a federal law requiring most Americans to have health insurance or face fines by 2014.

The proposed Missouri law would prohibit governments from requiring health insurance or from penalizing those who pay health bills with their own money.

A finance report filed Thursday shows the group backing the ballot measure received about a dozen donations from June 18 through June 30. Those donors included several Republican state lawmakers.
