OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The 33rd annual Ottumwa Pro Balloon Race kicked off Wednesday evening at the Jimmy Jones Shelter.

Sponsored by the Ottumwa Noon Lions club, the event brings something for the entire family.

“Because it’s a good time for everybody, there is something to do for everyone. We will have events for the kids, we have amusement rides, we have vendors, we have food, we have music, we have balloons,” said event co-organizer Holly Dommer.

While inclement weather can permit the balloons from taking off to the skies, the event will continue rain or shine.

“The weather is a big factor in our event because it is very dependant on if the balloons fly. The wind and obviously the amount of rain we have had is an issue when trying to find a place to land and take off for the pilots,” Dommer said.

Wednesday night’s event starts with a pork dinner with proceeds going to the Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis.

It also includes all-you-can-ride amusement rides for $15.

“We are anticipating a lot of people. We want a lot of people to come out and enjoy the experience of the balloons. It is a fantastic family event that has been going on for 33 years,” Dommer said.

The event continues through Sunday afternoon.

Dommer welcomes families who want to bring their own food and drink.

The event is free to attend, but rides and food to cost.

There are Balloon Night Glows Friday and Saturday starting at dusk.

On Thursday, the band “Southside Smitty” will perform. On Friday, “Defiant” and on Saturday “The Justice Band” will perform.

Dommer reccomends parking at the Quincy Place Mall. She also said that drivers leaving the park will only be permitted to turn right.
