JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missouri regulators have approved new rules for implementing a mandate that utilities use renewable energy to produce electricity.
Voters in 2008 approved a ballot measure that forces investor-owned utilities to use renewable energy sources for at least 2 percent of their electricity by 2011. The amount increases to about 15 percent in 2021, and at least 2 percent of the renewable energy must be solar.
Utilities are allowed to generate their own electricity with renewable energy sources or by purchasing credits. The rules affect nearly 2 million customers of AmerenUE, Kansas City Power & Light, KCPL-Greater Missouri Operations Co. and The Empire District Electric Co.
