COLUMBIA, MO. (AP) -- A Columbia company is offering help to people who want a cheaper, more environmentally friendly way to lay their loved ones to rest.
Customers of Pushing Up Daisies can be buried in a forest west of Columbia with no embalming and no vaults. In fact, company owners require that the body be in a biodegradable and nontoxic coffin or shroud.
Co-owner Bill Goddard says the business combines two of his beliefs - that typical funerals are too expensive and are hard on the environment.
The Columbia Tribune reports that Goddard says a standard funeral can cost $12,000 or more. He can offer funerals for as little as $1,185.
