OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Iowa's teenage drivers may soon face tighter regulations when they hit the road.

The Iowa Senate approved a measure requiring young drivers to have a learner's permit for a year. Currently, they only have to have their permit for six months.

Additionally, permit drivers will only be allowed to carry one passenger under the age of 21.

The measure also changes the curfew for the first year a teen has a license. The teen won't be allowed behind the wheel between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

"You know I think were right in the middle where we need to be.  We will see what future legislation is on cell phones and texting and things like that. Because I am sure that will be part of upcoming consideration," said Wapello County Chief Deputy Mark Miller.
