DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Dozens of schools are closed across Iowa as a major winter storm makes a beeline for the Midwest.
The National Weather Service expects 10 to 14 inches of snow over much of central Iowa with up to 16 inches from east of Des Moines to near Waterloo on Tuesday and into Wednesday. Strong winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts of 50 mph, will arrive Tuesday night, creating blizzard conditions.
Light to moderate snow had fallen across Iowa by early Tuesday and was expected to last through midday before it begins to intensify by afternoon.
A number of weather warnings and advisories have been issued for Iowa, including a blizzard warning for northeast Iowa from noon Tuesday through Wednesday evening. A blizzard watch is also in effect for southwest, central and eastern Iowa into Wednesday.
