QUEEN CITY, MO --

We had a phone call complaining of a lot of dead deer in a Queen City yard.

Dozens of deer were lying in front of a private processor's facility. The processor says someone called the Operation Game Thief hotline and a local conservation agent stopped by Thursday morning. The owner said he had to clear the deer out and get them processed Thursday night.

We talked to Conservation Agent Shannon Smith, who said the owner followed the department's guidelines by having a license and keeping a record of all the deer. He said as far as the quality of the deer meat, that's up the health department. Smith said someone from the health department was there Thursday morning, but no samples were taken. And as far as he could see and smell, the deer didn't seem to have spoiled.

Some of the deer are for the Share the Harvest program. It's a program to feed the hungry. Smith told the owner if any of the deer was spoiled, the meat couldn't be used for the program. He will go back Friday to make sure the deer are cleared out.
