OTTUMWA, IA -- Voters were casting their ballots Tuesday in the city of Ottumwa. Poll workers around many polling places were up early to start the voting. Even without any national or statewide races on the ballot, officials are expecting a big turnout. City council and the mayoral races are hotly contested and might be the reason for the turnout.
Enthusiasm hasn’t dwindled this year even without the big races.
“Yes they’re very excited. Everybody’s very excited saying we need new people in,” said poll worker Helen Epperson.
Many voters find it very, if not more important to vote in the local elections.
“I think there are a lot of local issues that have come to the forefront and maybe over the last several years that are important for people to come out,” said local voter Rick Vose.
Poll are still open in Ottumwa until 8 p.m.
