KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Missouri lawmakers passed a $23 billion budget Thursday night that relies on federal stimulus money to help fund schools, colleges and other state services.
Fact Finder learned the Kirksville Area Technical Center is on the receiving end of $5.25 million for renovations, construction and new programs.
The matching money will be added to $5.25 million in bonds approved by Kirksville voters last year.
Construction is already underway on the technical center.
"With community support, we've been able to have two bond issues that have allowed us to progress toward completing this facilities plan, and this matching money that we're now going to receive from the state will enable us to take that plan, which was started over five years ago, forward even further,” said Pat Williams, Kirksville Schools Superintendent.
Among other things, the center will add space for a welding program, expand the agriculture and construction trades programs and renovate automotive technology, but that's not all.
"We're expanding our practical nursing program, renovating their existing area, but also adding space for a new state-of-the-art lab, and we'll be able to take more students into that program,” said Terri Jones, Kirksville Area Technical Center Director.
The center also plans to add a Welding program, expand its Agriculture and Construction Trades programs.
The Automotive Technology area will be renovated.
Renovations at the Technical Center also include updated electrical, heating and ventilation for the entire building.
State Representative Rebecca McClanahan and State Senator Wes Shoemyer were instrumental in securing the funding.
Fact Finder also found out that state lawmakers cut from the budget more than $4 million in proposed funding for the Kirksville Police Department to provide DNA testing for the state.
Governor Nixon still has to sign off on the budget passed by lawmakers.
