FROM THE DESK OF MARY GASKILL

Des Moines, Iowa – State Representative Mary Gaskill of Ottumwa was pleased to announce today that Ottumwa will receive $1,000,000 to redevelop abandoned and foreclosed homes.  The grant was made from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

“In these tough economic times, we need to revitalize our neighborhoods and provide safe, affordable housing for middle class families.  The grant will help us strengthen and rebuild our community,” said Gaskill.

The NSP provides emergency assistance for redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as called for in the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The NSP funds were distributed in order to stabilize neighborhoods and reduce the decline in value of neighborhood homes by providing funds for financing mechanisms, to purchase and rehabilitate residential properties, establish land banks, the demolition of blighted homes and the redevelopment of demolished or vacant homes. They emphasize green building practices and long-term affordability for the low, moderate and middle income individuals and families.

The State of Iowa received $21,607,907 in NSP funds this year. The Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) is administering the NSP for the State of Iowa.
