KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Starting Monday, grocery stores will have to label their meat products letting consumers know which country their meat comes from. The law is Congress mandated.
HyVee in Kirksville has already been putting the country of origin label on its meat for about a year.
Besides the United States, some of HyVee’s meat comes from Mexico and Canada. But meat manager Brad McVey says more and more of their meat is coming from the US. “Mostly all of our beef and pork is from the USA. The chicken is also. But the ground beef can be mixed. Sometimes we have to draw from another plant and that plant has some mixed,” McVey said.
The label indicates where the animal was born, not slaughtered.
KTVO called Walmart in Kirksville to find out their policy in regards to their meat and where it comes from. The meat manager refused to comment.
