KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Our Fact Finder Team has learned of an alleged scandal involving the founders of a locally used ministry.
Angel Food Ministries, a nonprofit food assistance program, admits there is a grand jury investigation " into alleged financial irregularies concerning individuals." Churches nationwide are outraged, and some are even cutting ties with the program altogether.
At least one of the two churches that use the Angel Food program in Kirksville is following the investigation and waiting to make a decision on their future with the program.
“There's no reason to kill a ministry just because some of the people at the very top have taken advantage of it. With a half a million people per month benefitting from this, it's going to have a dramatic impact if all of a sudden they stop. If they would just find new leadership, wow, the possibilities could just expand them, especially in the economic climate we're in,” said Pastor Marty Joplin, First Baptist Church.
Currently First Baptist Church and Hamilton Street Baptist Church in Kirksville both use the Angel Food program. Joplin tells Fact Finder he sent a letter to Angel Food Ministries, asking that organizers review their practices.
