KIRKSVILLE, MO --  

A bit of Scottish heritage came alive Saturday at the 10th annual Scottish Highland Games in Kirksville.

“Imagine if you will, a sport where your entire family gets together and just pals around and has a good time. But instead your family is a bunch of large individuals who throw heavy objects. That is the basis of the Scottish Highland Games,” said participant Bob Weigel.

32 athletes gathered in Rotary Park for a day of friendly competition. The Highland Games are played nationwide, and you don't have to be Scottish to participate. Men in kilts compete in a variety of historic games by throwing rocks, hammers, and wooden poles called cabers. Athletes from six states came in to participate in the games, including a professional world champion.
