SULLIVAN COUNTY, MO. -- A state trooper and another Heartland man both received minor injuries during an unusual chain of events early Thursday afternoon.
It happened at 12:40 p.m. on Highway 5 in Sullivan County, four miles north of Milan.
Trooper Reid Fessler discovered a car stopped on the highway in the oncoming lane of traffic.
As he approached the vehicle, the car started traveling backwards in the roadway.
It went through a fence, across a ditch and through a field in reverse, coming to rest in a fence row south of Paisley Road.
As Fessler went up to the car, it caught on fire.
He, with the help of a private citizen and Sullivan County sheriff's deputies, removed the driver before the car became engulfed in flames.
The driver was Terry Fishel, 54, of Pollock, Missouri.
Fishel was taken to Sullivan County Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Highway Patrol said further investigation revealed a medical condition contributed to the incident.
