OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The holiday season is a time to be thankful for what we have and also to give back to those that are less fortunate. And Ottumwa High School is a great example of helping give back to the community.

From November 5 to November 20, more than 11,000 food items were donated by Ottumwa High School students.

Organizers said as students learned about the Southern Iowa Food Bank having trouble filling their shelves, the donations started to pour in.

“I think that they didn't think that we could reach the goal either but the more people started bringing stuff, the more excited they got and the more they started bringing things. So it helped with everything here so they could see the growth of our items,” said Megan Wetrich, Interact Club Sponsor.

Vans came to the school Monday to transport all of the donated items to the Southern Iowa Food Bank.

The food drive was put on by the Interact Club.

Wetrich said the drive made a lot of students realize that there are those suffering from hunger right here in our community.
