BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Voters in Davis County will have the option on their ballot Tuesday to change the way the county uses its one-cent sales tax.

Currently, 100% of the county's one-cent sales tax goes to property tax relief, but the Board of Supervisors would like 50% to support repair and maintenance on the county's secondary roads.

Each county is limited in how much they can spend on road repair, so shifting the funds from the one-cent sales tax is the one way more money can be designated to the roads needing work.

"Our funding revenue - the state of Iowa regulates how much money we can generate through taxes in Davis County and that's approximately [$687,000] a year and that's not enough to take care of everything," said Matt Greiner, of the Davis County Board of Supervisors.

Greiner said Davis County has 820 miles of roads to maintain and 13 bridges currently needing repair.

If the redistribution does not pass Tuesday, the county will have to slow street repair and develop a five-year plan that will try to best utilize the funds they have.
