KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Grocery shopping will not only help you feed your family, but now it will also help you put gas in your car.

Hy-Vee Incorporated and Casey’s General Stores are launching a program that will allow customers to save $2 or more per gallon on gasoline at all Hy-Vee and Casey’s stores.

The new Fuel Saver program gives fuel discounts to shoppers who purchase grocery items in Hy-Vee’s weekly fuel saver ad.

In the ad, Hy-Vee will have up to 50 designated items that you can buy to receive discounts on your gas purchases.

For example, if you buy Tide laundry detergent, you can earn 2 cents off per gallon.

There is no limit on how many discounted items you can buy.

If an item is marked 6 cents per gallon discount, you can buy three of them and receive an 18 cent discount.

Kirksville Hy-Vee Store Director Jeff Suchomel said this will help families a lot.

“The average family right now is spending about $350 a month on gas,” Suchomel said. “If you're in here buying stuff already anyway sign up for that card, get your discount and you might look at the ad and pick up two or three more items. You can save 50 or 60 cents a gallon by buying things you were going to get anyway.”

The maximum discount you can receive per fill-up is equal to the current price of one gallon of gasoline, no matter how many dollars worth of savings you have accumulated on your fuel saver card. So, if gas is $3.22 you can only receive a discount of $3.22 during that fill-up. The remaining discount balance can be used on future fill-ups, but the discounts expire 30 days from the purchase of each fuel saver item.

To receive the free fuel saver card, you can sign up at Hyvee.com or go to the Hy-Vee customer service counter.

To see how much you have earned on your fuel saver card, you can look at your latest Hy-Vee receipt, check on the Hy-Vee website or call the Hy-Vee customer service counter.

You can use the Fuel Saver card at any of the 234 Hy-Vee stores, Hy-Vee Drugstore, Hy-Vee Gas or Hy-Vee Mainstreet stores and Casey’s General stores.
