OTTUMWA, IOWA -- With election day five days away, early voting numbers are being tallied in the Hawkeye State; and according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s office, they are record breaking.

Most of the ballots returned have been registered Democrats, and that can be attributed to the party’s ground game to get out the early vote.

Wapello County has already broken it’s record from 2008 when it comes to early voting.

“We have had, so far, as of today, 6,541 ballots. I believe in 2008, we had a little over 6.000; so I am assuming since we have five days until the election that people can vote early, we will probably, well we are already over that number,” said Kelly Spurgeon, Wapello County Auditor.

In preparation for election day, the auditor’s office was testing the voting machines.

The machines are tested to make sure that ballots are properly counted.

According to the auditor’s office, they are allowed to start counting absentee ballots on Monday, November 5th.
