OTTUMWA, IOWA -- A generous donation from an Ottumwa couple will help the children and dependents of local firefighters and law enforcement officers attend Indian Hills Community College.

James and Susan Boxx are working with the Indian Hills Foundation to set up six $850 scholarships to be given out each school year to students at the school.

"When they first started talking to us, they indicated they wanted it to support dependents of firefighters and law enforcement personnel," said Rhonda Conrad, Executive Director of the Indian Hills Foundation. "Jim had actually been with the fire department for 32 years and he's been retired for a few years now, so he really wanted to help those people that he worked with and their dependents. We talked several times, they gave us a substantial donation, which allows us to set up a scholarship for the next school year, 2013-14, it will be perpetual, which means it'll be awarded every year."

In recognition for their gift, Indian Hills will name the Rural Emergency Training Center at the North Campus after the Boxxes. The facility is used to train local law enforcement officers and firefighters.

The application for the scholarship will be available starting January 1 on the Indian Hills website. The scholarship is open to incoming freshman or current students who are dependents of a firefighter or law enforcement personnel in Ottumwa or the Wapello County area.
